Wild Woman Story Slam

Come stroll the avenue for the Annual Collingswood Craft and Fine Arts Festival and stay after dusk for the Night Market. The streets will be full of music, dance and more. Inside Galerie Marie, we'll host our 3rd Annual Wild Woman Story Slam. This year's  theme is Love stories!  Come early to snag a seat. The first two years were standing room only!

THE BARNES FOUNDATION: BEYOND THE MAINSTREAM 

Instructor: Kimberly Camp 

Mondays September 9 - October 7, 2019

6:30-9:00 p.m. 

Rohrer Center Cherry Hill Campus Room 110 

This course will examine the Barnes Foundation; the life of its founder, Dr. Albert C. Barnes, who was before reviled during his lifetime; and the reasons for this hostility. 

DATES & TOPICS: 

Week 1: 9/9 

The Beginning: We’ll review history, politics and art that influenced Albert Barnes and his ideas about democracy, race and art. 

Week 2: 9/16 

The Foundation as a School: What the foundation is – and isn’t, and what Barnes’ intent was in creating the foundation, in light of the Jim Crow era, the silent migration and ending segregation. 

Week 3: 9/23 

Advocacy and Artists: A look at African-American artists who studied at the Barnes, and specific examples of Dr. Barnes’ work in helping change the dynamic of racism in the country and in the region 

Week 4: 10/7 

The Harlem Renaissance and the Return to the South: The artists and ideas that formed the Renaissance, and profiles of artists whose lives were changed through reverse migration. Week 5: 10/14 To What End ?: We’ll talk specifically about Barnes’ Will, the Foundation’s Charter and the controversy surrounding Lincoln University and the move of the Foundation to Center City.

Galerie Marie is 10 minutes from downtown Philadelphia by car or take the PATCO train to the Collingswood stop and we're three blocks away.  Street and garage parking is available for 50 cents/hour. Parking is free in December.
